START - Substance Use Treatment and Response Team

START provides rapid access to out-patient detox for those who need help stopping or stabilizing their substance use.
START provides rapid access to out-patient detox for those who need help stopping or stabilizing their substance use, or are reluctant or unable to access residential withdrawal management facilities. START provides rapid stabilization onto Buprenorphine/Naloxone for people dependant on opioids, as well as manage low risk withdrawal, including alcohol withdrawal, in a person's home.

Treatment includes assessment, withdrawal management, individual treatment plans and referral to counselling and other psychosocial interventions.

To be eligible for the START program, individuals must meet certain criteria including:
  • Be living within Vancouver.
  • Clients 16-18 must be living in a stable environment with a guardian who is able to support them through their withdrawal.
  • Alcohol withdrawal applicants must have a 24-hour support person to support them through the first 3-4 days of their withdrawal process.
  • It takes up to two weeks from intake to completion, and involves assessment by a nurse and physician, followed by daily home or clinic visits for the first five days of the program.
